How to join Yate Bowling Club
If you would like to become a member of the club, please contact us at this address: membership@yatebowling.co.uk
The downloadable membership form is available here.
Or you can come down to the club on a Monday night from 6pm and have a chat with members or have a go at playing under the guidance of our coach. No previous experience is necessary.
There is a yearly club subscription of £100. For the first year there is an introductory rate of £50. Further details are available on application.
Very modest green fees are charged for playing in friendly matches (£4 for home matches and £3 for away matches) and a £3 charge applies for each club competition that you enter. There is no green fee for roll-ups.
New members are always welcome and will be well looked after, thanks to our "buddy" scheme and our qualified coaches are on hand to offer guidance.
No special or expensive equipment is required when you begin - all you need is a pair of flat-soled shoes. The club has a wide selection of second-hand bowls to choose from and all other equipment is provided for you.
If you take to the game and wish to become more actively involved in the club, we can point you in the right direction to purchase your own bowls, bowling shoes, carrying bag, etc. Games are usually played in white club tops (available from the club) and either grey or white trousers or skirts for ladies.
All members are encouraged to join up to our internal league matches, which are run on our Monday club nights. A pool of members are arranged into teams of 5 or 6 and a schedule is arranged between themselves by the team captain. It is a relaxed and enjoyable way to get experience playing, understanding the rules and etiquette of playing the game and getting to know the other members of Yate Bowling Club. There is a charge of £4 entry for the season.
All members are encouraged to play friendly matches for the club, whether you're an old hand or a complete beginner. These are an ideal way to improve your game, get to know your fellow Yate bowlers and to meet other bowlers around the area. There are typically three matches a week during the summer months, each one lasts three hours on average, with travelling time (to "away" matches). These usually involve and tea break halfway through and drink and get together with the opposition after the match. All very sociable.
You put forward your name for the matches that are upcoming and the selection committee will pick the team and inform the players that they have been selected or placed on the reserve list about a week before the match. Members then confirm that they are still available to play. Should they realise they are not available for the match, they inform the Match Captain and the reserves will be contacted to replace them. It is important that if you are playing in a match, you arrive in good time for the start of the match (30 minutes prior to the start).
Members take turns being the designated drivers for away matches and arranging lifts for other members, so lack of transport need not be a restriction.
Members may be asked to organise the teas for matches or man the bar, usually not more than twice a season.
At least once a year, an away day is organised to play a team further afield such as Exmouth or Blandford. A coach is organised and being in the middle of summer, it can be a very enjoyable day out.
Members are encouraged to put their names forward for the League teams, if they feel their skill at the game is sufficient enough to help the team achieve success in a serious and sometimes pressured game.
